Why book an artist instead of a salon slot

A walk in salon appointment is fine for everyday nails. It is the wrong tool for a wedding or a shoot.

Three things change when you book an individual artist.

• They come to you. On a wedding morning or a shoot day, nobody has time to travel. The artist works in your room while hair and makeup happen.
• You get the same hands twice. A trial and the real day are done by one person. A salon may give you whoever is free.
• They plan for the camera. A shoot artist thinks about shape, finish and skin tone. A high street manicure just thinks about colour.

There is a fourth reason on set. A nail artist who stays for the day fixes chips between looks. That saves retouching time later, and retouching is charged by the hour.

How much a nail artist costs in Dubai

Dubai has a very wide market. A mall kiosk and a Marina studio are not the same service, and freelance rates sit differently again.

Treat these as market ranges, not fixed quotes. Ask for the price in writing with the service, the travel and the number of people inside it.

What changes the price

• Product system. Regular polish, gel, builder gel and acrylic are different jobs with different costs.
• Length and structure. Adding length takes more product and more shaping time.

Shape

Almond and soft oval shapes make fingers look longer on camera. Square shapes read heavier in close up, especially on shorter fingers. Short and rounded works best for jewellery and product shots, because the hand should not compete with the item.

Finish

High shine looks beautiful in person. Under studio lights it creates bright hotspots on every nail. A soft satin or cream finish photographs much cleaner. If you want shine, tell the artist it is for camera so they can adjust the top coat.

Cuticles and edges

• 8 to 12 weeks beforeStart nail care if you want length. Nails grow slowly, so this is when strengthening or builder gel begins.

How the day is structured

• Call time. The artist usually arrives with or before hair and makeup.
• Prep. Shaping, cuticle work and base go on before the first look.
• On set. The artist stays to fix chips, change press on sets and keep hands moisturised.
• Wrap. Removal if the model needs bare nails afterwards.

What to put in the brief

• Shoot date, call time and total hours.
• Location and whether there is a table, a plug and good light.
• How many models, and how many nail looks per model.
• Reference images for shape, length and colour.
• Whether the hands are hero, meaning they will be shot in close up.

Licence and hygiene checks

This is the section nobody writes, and it is the one that protects you.

In Dubai, anyone charging for beauty work needs to be licensed. Salons and studios hold a trade licence from the Department of Economy and Tourism, plus Dubai Municipality approval for the premises. Freelancers work either under a salon licence or on their own freelance permit.

Every beautician and nail technician also needs a Dubai Municipality occupational health card. It is renewed every year and costs roughly 170 to 690 AED depending on the category.

Unlicensed home beauty work is common and it carries real risk. Fines apply to the person providing the service, and tool hygiene is the part that affects you directly.

That last point is the real mark of a professional. Sealing a problem under an overlay hides it rather than fixing it. Anyone willing to do that is not protecting your nails.
